An investigation has begun into the death of a woman who fell into the River Bure in the yacht basin at Great Yarmouth.

Two coastguard teams from Gorleston and Winterton were called to help Norfolk Police search for the 24-year-old at 0230 BST on Sunday.

The RAF rescue helicopter from Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk was also brought in to help with the search.

The woman was found at the mouth of the river at 0400 BST and was taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston by helicopter.

She was pronounced dead on arrival.

The woman had been on board the Dawn Horizon, which had been hired from Horizon Craft in Acle by eight men from Crowthorne in Berkshire.

It is believed the woman had joined them for a barbecue and drinks.

She fell into the water, but it is not known whether she fell from the boat or the quayside.

Officers have spoken to the men on board the cruiser.

Colin White, watch manager of Yarmouth Coastguard said that the river in the basin is tidal and has strong currents.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said they believed the woman lived locally.

This is the second death on the Norfolk Broads in just over a week.

On 19 July a 42-year-old woman from London died after a cruiser overturned on the River Bure, trapping her inside.
