Trust to secure wherries' future
Wherry
Wherries ploughed their trade on the Broads in Norfolk and Suffolk
A charitable trust is being launched to secure the future of wherries - the traditional cargo boats of the Broads in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Only seven vessels remain afloat. The trust needs an estimated 60,000 a year to restore, maintain and operate the wherries on the local rivers.

The Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust is due to be officially launched later by the Bishop of Norwich.

It will take place on Wednesday at the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club at Wroxham.

Peter Bower, of the trust, said: "We have struggled for 20 years to keep the wherries going - there's plenty of demand for their use, but running costs are high.

"We want to protect the wherries for future generations.

"The wherries are Norfolk - look at how many companies use them for their logo. They've just got to be kept going."
