New homes plan for council land
Plans to build affordable housing on land owned by Norfolk County Council have been given the go-ahead.

The new houses on farmland in South Walsham - half for rent and half for shared ownership - were approved by Broadland District Council.

Construction work is expected to start on about a dozen new houses in July and should be completed in the New Year.

The county council is in consultation with district councils to find more land suitable for development.

Councillor Shaun Murphy, who is overseeing the land initiative, said: "There is a serious shortage of homes in Norfolk that are within reach of local people's pockets and although the county council is not a housing authority, we want to do our bit to help.

"This approach will be welcomed by the large number of people in Norfolk who know what a struggle it is to afford or find a home to rent, in a housing market which continues to move out of the reach of many."
