CCTV used in fly tipping battle
Authorities in York will be stepping up their efforts to combat fly tipping as summer approaches.

Extra CCTV equipment is being installed in the city's public spaces, alleyways and roads where rubbish is known to be often illegally dumped.

The City of York Council says it is determined to catch those who discard items such as fridges and freezers - which can cost up to 1,000 to remove.

And residents who want to report fly tippers can call a special action line.

Council street environment manager Jackie Armitage said the launch of the dedicated line had opened their eyes to the extent of the problem in the city.

"We will be focusing on known hot spot areas over the coming months and hope to be able to capture perpetrators in the act through additional CCTV equipment," she added.

The most frequently dumped items are fridges and freezers, which are collected free by the council upon request from residents.
