A �1m award from the National Lottery means plans for a new museum in Northamptonshire can go ahead.
The grant means work to restore a former shoe factory building on land near the Wellingborough Castle theatre complex is due to begin next summer.
The town's Winifred Wharton Trust, which applied for the funding, will contribute �100,000 to the project.
It is hoped the museum, which will have themed room settings from different eras, will be open by Christmas 2006.
Swimming pool
Before becoming a shoe factory after the World War I, the town building housed a swiming pool built by the Dulley Brewery in the 1890s for its workers.
Part of the pool will be uncovered and on display once the museum opens.
The new museum will also display the collection currently at the Civic Centre, taken over by the Winifred Wharton Trust from the town's Civic Society.
