The swimming ability of school pupils in open water may need to be tested before they are allowed to go on adventure holidays, a coroner has said.
Northants coroner Anne Pember spoke out at the inquest into the death of Aaron Goss, 17, of Rushden, Northants.
He went missing while swimming with other pupils of Wollaston School in a river in the Tena region of Ecuador in Tena on 26 July last year.
His body was found three days later in the Rio Anzu river.
The hearing was told the only swimming ability requirement on the consent form for the trip was for the pupil to state they could swim 50 metres.
No tests were carried out to confirm the claim, either in indoor pupils or open water in Britain or abroad.
Delivering a narrative verdict after a two-day inquest into his death, Mrs Pember said she would be writing to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and the adventure holidays licensing authorities.
"I shall ask that they notify companies organising expeditions where open swimming and river swimming is a possible activity they should consider testing pupils' swimming abilities and water confidence," he said.
Mrs Pember ruled Aaron had drowned on the trip. His body was found three days later, more than 60 miles from the spot where he went missing.
