Historic hall open for last time
Apethorpe Hall
Apethorpe Hall was purchased by the government in 2004
A 15th Century hall once owned by Henry VIII will open its doors to the public for the last time this weekend.

English Heritage has spent 4m restoring Apethorpe Hall in Northamptonshire, which will be put up for sale as a private house next year.

The hall and its estate, dating from 1470, deteriorated after it was left empty in 1982.

The government bought it in 2004, with the then Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell calling it "irreplaceable".

Visitor tours around the hall are being run by English Heritage and are fully booked for this weekend.

The conservation charity has always said it believed the best use for the hall was as a country home for a single, private owner.

More than 3,000 people visited the hall over the summer.
