A public inquiry into the expansion of Nottingham's tram system will be held in the city in November.
The city and county councils want to build a second route from the city centre to the south of the city in Clifton, Chilwell and Beeston.
The Department for Transport said the six-week inquiry will be chaired by the Planning Inspectorate.
A consultation process has already taken place to allow people to voice support or objections to the proposals.
The entire process to determine whether the application - filed in April 2007 - will go ahead is expected to take 18 months.
It is estimated extending the network to the south of the city will cost in excess of �400m.
The tram currently runs from Hucknall through the city centre to the main rail station.
Construction is set to start in 2010 with trams running by 2013.
