Bridge is closed in safety fears

Safety fears have closed one of the bridges over the River Trent just ahead of its busiest weekends.

The suspension bridge linking West Bridgford and the Victoria Embankment would normally carry thousands to Nottingham's Riverside Festival.

But owners Severn Trent said a structural survey showed problems with walkway and wooden support beams.

The firm said there would be further tests but it was likely to be "weeks not days" before it reopened.

Busy crossing

About 100,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which includes fairground rides, live musical performances and fireworks.

Stephen Barker, from the city council, said people visiting would be affected.

"I think for most people who are making a single visit for a few hours, it will have a limited impact, with an extra five or 10 minutes extra walk to get there.

"I think the people who will be most affected are those living right next to the bridge who use it several times a day."
