Parking levy plan consultation

A consultation has begun on the penalties that could be imposed if firms in Nottingham refuse to pay a proposed workplace parking levy.

A charge for motorists who park at their workplace in the city is being considered by the government.

The city council submitted its plans to charge firms up to �350 per car per year as a way of cutting congestion and funding public transport.

Some businesses have said the extra expense could drive investment away.

The Department for Transport has announced a 12-week consultation over the plans to introduce the levy.

It is the latest in a long series of consultations, inquiries and debates over workplace parking and will specifically look at how penalty charges for breaking the rules would be imposed.

If approved the charge, which is planned to start at �185 and then rise in stages, could be in place within two years.

It is hoped it would raise more than �5m in its first year.
