Wind farm gets go-ahead on appeal

A wind farm looks set to be built on a former Nottinghamshire colliery after permission was granted on appeal.

Plans for the five turbines at Stonish Hill, Bilsthorpe, were rejected by Newark and Sherwood District Council in March 2008 after local opposition.

But developers lodged an appeal and the Planning Inspector has now given the go-ahead.

The inspector said there would be a visual impact on the area but this was outweighed by environmental benefits.

Protests by residents against the 100m (330ft) turbines had included releasing hundreds of balloons to signify letters of opposition.

They said they were disappointed at the decision but would consider taking further action.

The appeal was lodged by Eakring Farming Ltd and Harworth Power Ltd, a part of UK Coal, who want to erect a total of five turbines.

A previous application for seven turbines had also been refused.
