Tram staff strike over pay freeze

Union members voted overwhelmingly in support of a walkout

Nottingham's tram staff have gone out on strike following a dispute over a pay freeze.

A reduced tram service is running from Hucknall to the city centre. Some services are being replaced by buses.

Talks between the GMB union and operator Nottingham Tram Consortium (NTC) failed to reach an agreement.

The GMB union had called for a 5% pay increase but Nottingham Tram Consortium (NTC) refused because it faces a drop in its annual income.

The GMB union said 89.8% of its 134 members had voted in a favour of a walkout and warned that more strike action could follow.

Helen Goulding, general manager for NTC, said she was "very disappointed" they had been unable to reach agreement to avoid the GMB's industrial action, and apologised to customers for the disruption caused.

She added: "I remain committed to finding a satisfactory solution that meets the needs of all involved to avoid further strike action."

The strike is due to end at 0525 BST on Tuesday.
