Loyalty card to encourage walkers

Experts are urging regular exercise to cut rising obesity in the UK
Loyalty cards are being handed out to walkers to let them earn prizes as part of a fitness drive.

Participants get their cards stamped every time they join one of the weekly Witney Heath Walks in Oxfordshire - and after 20 stamps they get a free gift.

It is hoped the council-run scheme will encourage more people to take up regular exercise.

The first group of regular walkers are to pick up a specially-produced commemorative T-shirt on 18 May.

The one and two-mile walks are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and begin and end at the Windrush Leisure Centre.

A council spokesperson said: "Refreshments are served after the walks and this makes it a great social occasion too."

A recent report by England's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson stressed the urgent need for adults to take more exercise.
