Workers building the chicanes downed tools due to speeding traffic

A controversial scheme to slow traffic through a Cotswold village has been restarted after trials to find an alternative proved unsuccessful.
Work to finish installing chicanes through Bampton, Oxon, will restart after being temporarily halted in favour of an electronic warning sign.
The sign, activated by passing traffic, went on trial after complaints from motorists about the chicanes.
But a survey has shown the chicanes were more effective at slowing traffic.
Speeding drivers were such a problem in the village that workmen building the chicanes in May downed tools because they said aggressive motorists were putting them at risk.
They said a number of speeding drivers narrowly missed them.
Bampton residents said the chicanes were not the best way to slow traffic and complained to the council.
Councillor David Robertson, Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for transport, said: "There was a lot of debate in Bampton about the best way of making sure people kept to the speed limits.
"We now know for certain which is the best way. The chicanes have proved more effective," he continued.
"The people of Bampton have a right to expect us to come up with the best way of providing them with a safe environment in which speeding cars are restricted."
