The King of Norway has picked up an honorary degree from Oxford University.

King Harald studied economics and politics at Balliol College from 1960 to 1962.

He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Civil Law on Thursday for his role as a statesman and in recognition of the close ties between Britain and Norway.

The king was joined by senior university figures at a ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre before attending a reception and lunch at Balliol College.

King Harald, who was a keen rower during his time at the college, became an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College in 1983.
