BMW has denied claims it plans to cut production at its Mini plant in Oxford by 22% this year.
A source at the Cowley factory told BBC Oxford the carmaker plans to make 185,000 Minis in 2009, compared with 237,000 in 2008.
But Angela Stangroom from BMW said: "We are not in a position to forecast numbers of cars we will produce as it depends on customer orders."
On Monday 850 agency staff lost their jobs when weekend working was scrapped.
Ms Stangroom said: "The market conditions are volatile. It is regrettable that we have had to take the action we've taken."
