An auction of rare books in Oxford has raised about £20,000 for Oxfam. The highest bid was made for a copy of the History of the Second World War, signed by Sir Winston Churchill, which fetched £800 at Bonhams on Tuesday. Other highlights included a signed first edition of Jack Kerouac's On The Road and a signed first edition of Sebastian Faulks's Birdsong. The Oxfam auction raised £40,000 in 2008, but auctioneer David Walker said £20,000 was a good sum in the downturn. A History of Dorset from the late 18th Century attracted the second highest bid of £620, and a rare collector's edition of the Harry Potter series sold for £500. A spokesman for Oxfam said the money raised would go towards the charity's general fundraising pot, rather than a specific project.
