Call for a debate on 999 centre
Daniel Kawczynski
Mr Kawczynski claims lives could be at risk if the control centre shuts
An MP is hoping to secure a Commons debate on the proposed closure of Shropshire's ambulance control centre.

Daniel Kawczynski, Tory member for Shrewsbury and Atcham, said he had approached the Speaker as he wanted the issue put "directly" to ministers.

About 16,000 people signed a petition against plans to shut the centre and move staff to larger regional bases.

It comes after health minister Ben Bradshaw told campaigners he could not intervene in local services.

'Conflicting information'

West Midlands Ambulance Service wants to shut centres in Shrewsbury and Worcester and move staff to the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Mr Kawczynski said: "I want to try to secure a debate because we need to put these things directly to minsters in a very public way and say to them, 'look you are giving us very conflicting information about how to go about trying to prevent this from happening'."

The MP and other campaigners claim lives will be put at risk if the plan goes ahead as local area knowledge will be lost.

But the ambulance trust has denied this saying the move would speed-up response times as it can get more out of staff and resources at larger centres.
