Lottery cash helps bells ring out
Upton Magna's new church bells
There are now six bells at the church
The bells at a Shropshire church are ringing out again after help from the National Lottery Heritage (HLF) fund.

The bells at St Lucia's church in Upton Magna are being re-dedicated by the Bishop of Shrewsbury on Sunday.

Church Warden Dr John Sowerbutts said the bells had been unworkable for most of the past century because of woodworm and rust.

The HLF contributed 27,000 towards the 45,000 needed to repair the floor in the clock tower and tune the bells.

The rest of the money needed for the restoration was raised by local people, helped by a grant from the Shropshire Association of Church Bell Ringers.

Alan Smith, the Tower Captain at St Lucia's, said until now no major work had been done for at least 100 years.

One of the five bells in the tower dates back to the 16th century. Two of the others are dated 1605, one 1664 and the youngest, 1907. A new bell has been cast making it a ring of six.

"It makes a big difference to the sound of the bells," Mr Smith said.
