Meeting over Post Office branches

A meeting will be held between the Post Office and Shropshire County Council to discuss the future of branches.

The Post Office, which plans to shut 2,500 branches nationwide by the end of 2008, said detailed proposals for the county would be announced on Tuesday.

The council said it was very concerned at the impact "these proposed closures will have on Shropshire communities".

The Post Office said all feedback in a public consultation would be reviewed before final decisions were made.

'Express views'

Council leader Malcolm Pate said: "We will do everything we can to support people who want to campaign to save their local post offices.

"We will put Shropshire's case very firmly to Post Office managers when we meet them.

"We have lobbied the government about the potential impact closing post offices could have, and will continue to do so."

A Post Office Ltd spokesman said: "We want to ensure that everyone who uses, relies on or has any concern with Post Office services are both fully aware of the proposed changes, and are able to express their views.

"We are due to meet council representatives next week to discuss the proposals."

Post Office Ltd said 500 of the 2,500 branches nationwide would be replaced by an outreach solution such as having a mobile post office or one in a pub.
