Four US-style yellow buses will ferry around 260 children to schools in Somerset from September.

The 68-seater buses boast "low pollution" diesel engines and are built to higher safety standards than older coaches, says the county council.

They will be operated by Webberbus in service areas around Highbridge, Puriton and Woolavington.

Each bus will be fitted with CCTV, a panic button, satellite tracking and an SMS messaging facility.

John Bates, from the council, said: "The introduction of this new vehicle will set a bench mark for quality and safety for school transport in Somerset.

"I hope other operators will come up with similarly innovative schemes for the contracts that they operate for the council."
