At risk buildings log goes online
The former Regal cinema after restoration
The old Regal cinema in Wells became a music venue in 2004
People with an interest in historic building conservation in the Mendips can now find out information online.

The Buildings at Risk register was formerly published only once every four years and anyone wanting a copy had to apply to the council and pay for it.

One of the main purposes of the register is to focus attention on properties for potential restoration.

Recent work includes the renovation of the Regal cinema in Wells which was added to the register in 2001.

The 1930s building was "sensitively" converted into a live music venue in 2004, keeping its distinctive stained glass frontage and interior.

The Mendips district has almost 3,000 buildings of special architectural or historic interest, most of them Grade II listed.

Since the first publication of the Buildings at Risk register in 1993, more than 60 buildings have been removed after undergoing renovation.

In the current register, seven of the 52 entries are under repair and are expected to be removed by mid-2006.

The new electronic version can be downloaded from the council's website and is continuously kept up to date.
