Speedway team's racey poster
The poster
The poster was designed to boost attendances
A champion speedway team is spicing up the sport's image with a racey promotional poster.

Sheffield Tigers have printed thousands of copies of the poster showing a rider on his bike wearing just a crash helmet and boots.

Next to the rider's bare bottom is the slogan "Get your backside trackside".

But the adverts, which are aimed at boosting attendances for the minority sport, have caused a stir with some places refusing to put them up.

It's eye-catching but certainly not obscene
Paul Rickett

Paul Rickett, who designed the poster, said it was not intended to cause offence.

He said: "It seems to have become a bit controversial.

"I got the idea from a rider who went a few laps naked for a laugh about 30 years ago.

"We wanted something a bit different to get more people at the stadium so we came up with this for a bit of fun.

"It's eye-catching but certainly not obscene."

Secret identity

The identity of the rider featured on the poster remains a closely guarded secret.

The Tigers are defending treble-champions after a successful campaign last year.

They are currently top of this season's Premier League and attracted a crowd of approximately 1,500 fans to the Owlerton Stadium on Thursday night for their victory over Berwick.

Mr Rickett added: "There are so many other sports in Sheffield competing for fans that we felt we had to do everything we could to attract them to speedway."
