Councillors in Sheffield have new powers to ban the drinking of alcohol in public places.
Alcohol exclusion zones can now be introduced after consultations with the police, licensees and local residents.
The aim is to control anti-social behaviour and potential areas for alcohol bans include the city centre and Hillsborough shopping centre.
The powers are aimed at those who drink and then make others' lives unpleasant, said council leader Jan Wilson.
"These measures are not aimed at restricting legal, social drinking in the city such as outside bars and restaurants," Mrs Wilson added.
Backing for the alcohol bans also came from Scott Bailey, the owner of Dot Zero nightclub in Sheffield city centre.
He said: "Not only will it resolve the anti-social behaviour associated with street drinking, it will almost certainly reduce violence as people will not be able to carry bottles or glasses in the streets therefore not use them as weapons."
