Sledging teenagers hurt in park

Four teenage girls have been injured in an accident on an improvised sledge at a South Yorkshire country park.

One of the girls was flown to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield after the incident at the Rother Valley Country Park, Rotherham, at lunchtime.

The others were taken by ambulance to Rotherham District General Hospital, Yorkshire Ambulance Service said.

The teenagers are understood to have gone through a barbed wire fence before hitting a separate section of fence.

The ambulance spokesman said: "Yorkshire Ambulance Service received a call at 1.11pm to Rother Valley Country Park to a sledging incident involving a group of teenagers.

"One patient was taken to Northern General Hospital by air ambulance and three other patients were taken by road to Rotherham District General Hospital."

River barrier

Three emergency ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, an air ambulance and a clinical team leader attended the incident.

It is believed the girls were sledging in a field which had been fenced off to use for cattle-grazing.

The girls are understood to have gone through a fence containing barbed wire before hitting another fence, which stopped them from falling into a river.

The park is owned by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and is one of the biggest country parks in the area, developed on a 300-hectare site once used for opencast coal mining.

It is now a popular area for recreation and conservation.
