Cross-border road safety campaign

A cross-border campaign is under way to prevent families becoming the victims of serious accidents on the roads.

North Yorkshire Police has joined with neighbouring forces in Durham, Northumbria and South and West Yorkshire to target busy routes.

The campaign has been timed to coincide with the start of the half-term holidays this weekend.

Police said the holiday season was the trigger for some of the worst death and injury rates on the roads.

Officers, firefighters and road safety teams will patrol on the A1 and other busy routes, spreading the road safety message.

Sgt Andrew Stow, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "Officers will patrol the main holiday routes through the region to assist motorists to reach their destinations safely and with minimum disruption.

"I would encourage all road users to ensure that their vehicles are correctly prepared for the journey and to ensure they take regular breaks to combat the effects of fatigue.

"Those drivers who choose to drive irresponsibly will be fairly but firmly dealt with."

Police said last year road casualties were the lowest for 20 years in North Yorkshire, making a 25% cut on the previous year.

The main aim of the campaign is to achieve no casualties on the days of action - one of which will also be held on 18 July.
