Snow disrupts air and road travel in South Yorkshire

The runway at Doncaster Robin Hood airport has closed and many bus services in South Yorkshire were cancelled after heavy snowfall.

The terminal at Robin Hood remains open but no flights are taking off or landing there.

Across the county about 200 schools closed because of the weather.

First South Yorkshire said a large number of buses became stuck in snow and drivers were finding journeys hard in "deteriorating road conditions".

Passengers due to travel from Robin Hood airport have been advised to contact their airline direct.

Trams hit

On the roads, bus company, First, said it was trying to get some of its services in Sheffield back up and running again, bit by bit.

In Doncaster there are no Stagecoach services but the company said there is a skeleton service running in Chesterfield.

Snow has also caused disruption on the Sheffield Supertram network.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service cancelled journeys for patients due to attend routine appointments at hospital clinics.

A spokesman said it expected the service would also be cancelled on Wednesday because of the adverse weather conditions.

He added that transport was still operating for patients with urgent medical needs including renal and oncology treatments.

In Rotherham, the council said it was preparing to begin its fourth gritting run of the day in an attempt to keep its roads passable.

The authority's 12 salting vehicles had been out since 0430 BST treating roads.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for heavy snowfall and icy roads across Yorkshire. Further snow is forecast in the area on Wednesday.
