Safer crossings for five villages
Zebra crossing
Safer crossing points have been designated for five areas
Five towns and villages in East Sussex are to benefit from new zebra crossings thanks to a 200,000 council grant.

East Sussex County Council has given the cash for community safety schemes in Polegate, Five Ashes, Catsfield, Buxted and Stone Cross.

Speed reactive signs, approved in July, are also being introduced at 13 sites across the county.

Cllr Bob Tidy said the money would be making an "enormous contribution towards safer local communities".

The provision of safer crossing points is the second stage of an initiative that has allowed the council to spend more money on pedestrian safety.

Community safety chiefs have also agreed to fund two speed reactive signs from their 2004/05 budget for the A275 at Offham near Lewes.

There will also be 30,000 for a member of staff and for training and support for volunteers operating Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs).
