Marina palmed off with fake trees
Fake palm trees at Brighton Marina
The fake trees are 20ft tall and made of steel, coconut and plastic
Fake palm trees made of steel, plastic and coconut husks have been introduced to Brighton Marina in an attempt to inject some "Mediterranean glamour".

The trees are about 20ft tall - it would normally take about 20 years for palm trees to grow to that size.

Marina bosses said they had to use fake trees because real ones would not have survived Brighton's climate.

Visitors' opinions have varied from branding the palm trees "kitsch" to saying they thought they were real.

The fake trees, which have steel centres, and trunks made from recycled coconut husks and plastic leaves, are part of a general programme of improvements introduced by marina managers X-Leisure.

Spokeswoman Becky Taylor said: "We have no other choice, this is reclaimed land and 20-year-old palm trees of this height wouldn't have survived in Brighton Marina.

"The centre of the tree is made of steel and that's just to withstand the weather conducive to Brighton, and England really."
