Farms fail on health and safety
Nearly half of the farms inspected recently in Suffolk failed to meet all legal standards of health and safety, a report says.

A further 30 posed an immediate risk of death, injury or ill health according to the Health and Safety Executive.

Inspectors visited 171 farms during a week-long blitz last month.

They issued 30 Prohibition Notices where the relevant activity had to stop immediately and 78 Improvement Notices where there was a breach of the law.

Need to tighten up

The visits were part of a range of initiatives being conducted by the HSE aimed at reducing deaths, serious injury and ill health on farms.

Principal inspector Richard Bulmer said: "Many farms were identified as having good proactive health and safety systems in place - but the blitz did identify many shortcomings.

"A large number of breaches of the law - where there was no immediate risk - indicates a need to tighten up practices."
