High winds and snow closes Felixstowe container port

Gritters will only treat priority routes to conserve salt supplies

The port of Felixstowe in Suffolk has shut because of high winds while snow grips the county and a severe weather warning is issued by the Met Office.

Heavy snow is hitting east Suffolk and the port has now been closed, with police implementing Operation Stack.

Container lorries destined for the port will be parked up along the inside lanes of the A14 near Levington.

The county council is to ration grit to priority routes, A and B roads only, to conserve salt supplies.

In addition, routes to hospitals and fire stations will also be treated, a spokesman said.

The Highways Agency anticipates it has enough salt to last until the weekend for major trunk routes it is responsible for.

Police have said motorists should only take to the roads if they absolutely have to because more snow is forecast and conditions are likely to get worse.

National Express East Anglia said its rail services through the county were running normally.

The county council said 30 schools are closed across the county but mainly in the Felixstowe area.
