Post office quizzed over closures

Post office representatives have been quizzed by councillors in West Sussex over plans to close several branches.

Representatives from Post Office and Postwatch, the independent watchdog for postal services in the UK, were at the county council meeting on Wednesday.

Forty-nine post offices across Sussex could be closed under plans to reduce the network of branches across the UK.

Conclusions from the meeting will help form the council's overall response to the ongoing public consultation.

'Clear picture'

Residents have until Christmas Eve to make their views known on the proposals.

Twenty-one branches could close across West Sussex, with 28 at risk in East Sussex.

The meeting of the county council's Strategic Environmental Services Select Committee was an opportunity for councillors to scrutinise how the proposals would affect the community.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, committee chairman Clive Roberts said it would enable councillors to get "a clear picture" as to why the branches had been put forward for closure.
