Nature reserve manager appointed
Saltholme Pools (BBC)
Saltholme Pools will be transformed into the nature park
A man whose passion for wildlife was first sparked at a site on Teesside has been appointed to run a multi-million pound nature reserve there.

Work is under way to transform 1,000 acres of former industrial land into Saltholme nature reserve.

The RSPB is working with the Teesside Environmental Trust (TET) on the site, between Billingham and Seaton Carew.

Dave Braithwaite has been appointed site manager for the reserve, with more than 100,000 visitors expected a year.

Plans for the site include new pools, tracks, hides and walkways and a Wild Bird Discovery Centre.

Mr Braithwaite, 51, said: "As a teenager, I used to bird watch at Saltholme and around the Tees estuary and my passion for wildlife was fired by the fantastic spectacle of the vast numbers of wild birds to be seen in the area.

"I am very excited by the chance to help shape the new site. Saltholme will offer a unique family-friendly experience of wildlife and provide facilities for education and community activities as well as bringing jobs and new income to the area."

The Wild Bird Discovery Centre is due to open in 2008.
