Traditional games are helping to make children fitter and cutting incidents in the playground, organisers of a school project said.
Games involving hoops and skipping ropes form part of the Lakes Primary School's Active Play Project.
That along with the work of the Redcar school's buddies and play facilitators meant it was recognised at the Redcar and Cleveland Children's Fund awards.
Since it started, organisers said children are returning to class calmer.
The school's lunchtime and buddy co-ordinator Anita Calvert said: "Since we started the project, we have found this has helped with the inclusion of children with poor social skills and taken away a lot of the aggression.
"They're coming back to lessons a lot calmer and not getting into trouble."
The school's project was nominated for the award by West Redcar Sure Start Extension, which is one of 10 schemes benefiting from the Redcar and Cleveland Children's Fund.
