Monumental artwork plans revealed

'Temenos' is the first of five massive public artworks

One of the biggest public artwork projects in the world could be installed on Teesside.

Tees Valley Regeneration has announced plans for five monumental works by artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, of Arup.

Details of Temenos, the first structure, were unveiled earlier.

Situated close to Middlesbrough's famous Transporter Bridge, it would stand 164ft (50m) high and 360ft (110m) long, and cost �2.7m.

A planning application for Temenos is being submitted to Middlesbrough Council.

Others in the Tees Valley Giants series are planned for Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar.

Together, they would form one of the biggest public art projects in the world.

Joe Docherty, chief executive of Tees Valley Regeneration, said: "Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond's public artworks are known around the world for their size, complexity and the ambition of their vision, which is why we believe they are the right team for this project.

"The work we are unveiling today is just the first in a series of five monumental pieces, each related in terms of scale and engineering.

"Temenos will put the Tees Valley and wider region firmly on the map by demonstrating its long term vision and ambition."

He added: "It is always been our pledge to bring only the best to the Tees Valley and to have people of this calibre working on not just one, but five installations is a resounding result for the area."
