Big wheel plans move step closer
The big wheel
The big wheel is hoped to be in place for the Tall Ships Race
Plans to erect a giant ferris wheel on the Gateshead quayside moved a step closer on Wednesday.

Gateshead Council has considered an application for temporary planning permission for the 60m-high attraction, already dubbed the "Gateshead Eye".

And providing no additional objections are submitted by the end of the public consultation period next week, the wheel could get the go-ahead.

Hopes are high it could be in place in time for the Tall Ships Race in July.

There are still a number of hurdles to be overcome before the wheel is finally set up adjacent to the Sage Gateshead.

Engineers have to report on whether the area chosen is stable enough to support its weight, and negotiations need to be held with the operators of the wheel, World Tourist Attractions Ltd.

Further discussions with Newcastle Airport relating to the lighting of the wheel and its possible effect on aircraft also need to take place.

However, Gateshead Council said it is hopeful that the giant wheel can be brought to Gateshead in time for the Tall Ships Race celebrations on 25-28 July, and will remain there throughout the school summer holidays.
