Firm's 250k flooding 'thank you'
Emergency water tank
Bowsers and static tanks were set up in the town
A water company is to give almost 250,000 to an area of Northumberland hit by water shortages.

Up to 10,000 homes were left without water after two mains supplying Hexham and surrounding areas were swept away by floods earlier this month.

Northumbrian Water says the money is being donated for community projects to thank people for their patience.

Suggested areas are football pitches, community halls and grant donations for people who work with the disabled.

'Superb goodwill'

Alistair Baker from Northumbrian Water said: "Normally when customers lose supply, after a certain amount of time they are entitled to a small compensation payment in recognition of the company's service failure.

"However, in this instance with the severe weather, the Tyne was a torrent and it washed away two water mains that were crossing the river.

"Those were obviously circumstances beyond our control, but we always said we were so grateful for the superb community support and goodwill from the people in the area that we wanted to put something back into the affected communities."

Hexham resident Tim Crump said: "It's a great idea to spend on the community.

"Hexham generally is a prosperous community, but there are some pockets of social hardship, and it would be great if there were money going in to help that."
