Woman killed in stolen car crash
Scene of crash
It is believed the victim was pushing a buggy when she was hit
A woman has been knocked over and killed when a car thought to have been driven by an armed man crashed into a group of pedestrians.

Two children and their mother were also injured when the car, which was being pursued by police, hit the group.

A motorist told police an armed man had threatened him and pulled him out of his car in South Shields.

It is believed the woman, in her 40s, was pushing a child in a buggy when she was hit. A man has been arrested.

Marked vehicle

A police spokesman said the Independent Police Complaints Commission had been informed.

The car, a Honda Civic, was pursued for only a short distance by police in a marked vehicle.

It collided with a group of pedestrians on Horsley Hill Road, killing the woman.

A 28-year-old woman is in hospital where her condition is described as serious.

Her two children are also in hospital and a police spokesman said their condition was giving cause for concern.

Investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed the incident, which happened on Thursday lunchtime, is asked to contact Northumbria Police.
