Navy frigate to welcome students
Students and sea cadets are being offered the chance to board a Royal Navy frigate when it visits Tyneside.

HMS Portland will dock at Spillers' Wharf in Newcastle, on Friday for a five-day visit to the region.

During her stay the ship's new captain Commander Robert Bellfield will be welcoming around 160 students and cadets from nine different schools.

It is hoped young people will get a taste for life at sea and consider a career in the Royal Navy or Marines.

Lt David Concarr, North East recruitment officer for the Royal Navy, said: "We are grateful that so many youngsters are being the chance to tour the ship and find out more about the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

"At the moment we're particularly keen to recruit Royal Marines commandos, engineering technicians and aircrew."

HMS Portland, which has been in service for nearly six years and can reach a speed of 30.8 knots.

The ship was designed for anti-submarine warfare and has served all over the world.
