'Ambitious' plans for Wearside

Up to 10,000 new jobs and 1b of private investment is being promised for Sunderland by the city's regeneration company.

Sunderland Arc said the 15 year plan was the most ambitious proposal in Wearside's history.

The plans include ideas for two new bridges over the Wear and a sports village.

Part of Sunderland Arc's regeneration plans includes reviving the former site of the Vaux brewery by creating a new office site.

However, the site is currently owned by Tesco, which said it has not yet received a bid for the land.

Arc said they were still carrying out a survey of the site to determine its worth.

Business environment

Jonathan Bretherton, deputy chief executive of Sunderland Arc, said key sites in the city, including Holmeside, Farringdon row and Stadium Park next to the Stadium of Light, would be developed.

He said a "huge amount" of private investment was needed but public sector money would be used to kick-off the plans

"It is a 15 year plan to deliver 10,000 new jobs, 250,000sqm of office space and about 3,500 homes.

"We want to create a lot of office-based jobs by building a new business park on the Vaux site, we would also have employment on the leisure park so it will be a wide-variety of jobs.

"We went to create an environment where business people want to invest and we do understand what it take to encourage private sector developers to come into a city.

"We feel confident we have got what it takes."

'Interesting' plan

But Jim Murray, former head brewer at Vaux, said the development timescale was too long.

"It is a very, very interesting plan but it really concerns me that the city of Sunderland has to wait another 15 years before that site is developed.

"Even more disconcerting is the fact that the plan seems to depend to a very large extent on investment from the private sector.

"That site has laid derelict for four years, it is ready for redevelopment now, not in 15 years time."
