Three to receive honorary degrees

Bill Bryson has become Durham University's 11th chancellor
Bestselling author Bill Bryson has chosen the first people to be awarded honorary degrees in his new role as Durham University chancellor.

The US-born author was unveiled as the university's 11th chancellor in April.

He has chosen scientist Prof Richard Dawkins, Shakespeare expert Prof Stanley Wells and social inclusion advocate Rev Nicholas Holtam.

Mr Bryson will confer the honorary degrees at a ceremony in November in Durham Cathedral.

Professor Dawkins is a specialist in evolutionary biology and is also an author and broadcaster. He will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.

Professor Wells will receive the Doctor of Letters degree. He is chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Reverend Holtam, who is a Durham University graduate, will receive the Doctor of Civil Law degree.

He is also a religious broadcaster and writes on ethics, pastoral care and Christian mission.
