Children at a County Durham school are encouraging their parents to join a "park and stride" scheme to reduce the volume of school-run traffic.

Pupils at St Godric's RC Primary School in Framwellgate Moor, came up with the idea at a council meeting.

Every Friday, pupils and parents are invited to join one of three "walking buses" instead of driving.

And those who travel by school bus will be dropped off at a different location and walk through the school grounds.

The aim is to highlight the benefits of regular exercise, social interaction and increased road safety.

At the launch of the scheme, on Friday, the children were joined by Sam, Durham County Council's mascot for walking and cycling.

Head teacher, Christine Coxon, said: "I'm very proud of the children who, led by the school council, are making a genuine commitment to a healthy lifestyle and care of their environment through the park and stride initiative."

Further travel plans for the school include a secure cycle storage area, a parent waiting shelter, and new signage and road markings.
