Education bosses in County Durham are celebrating after school attendance levels reached a record high.
Figures for 2006/07 show fewer school days than ever before were lost through truancy or authorised absence.
Secondary attendance rate was 92.32%, compared with 91.91% the previous year, and primary attendance was 94.7% compared with 94.29%.
There was also a 10% reduction in the number of days lost through pupils being excluded.
Life chances
The figures represent 147,677 fewer half days lost to absence than last year.
Councillor Claire Vasey, Durham County Council's cabinet member for children's services, said: "Clearly, schools, parents and pupils are recognising the importance of good attendance levels.
"This is particularly important at secondary level where attendance levels can affect examination performance and where attainment can impact significantly on young people's future life chances and well-being.
