Householders in a County Durham town are to be charged �10 for the removal of bulky waste.
Darlington Council is introducing the tariff to try to encourage people to recycle larger items by giving them away or donating them to charity.
The charge will apply to the collection of furniture, electrical appliances, fridges and freezers from 1 April.
Good quality second-hand furniture can be donated to charity Frade (Furniture Reclamation and Delivery).
The charity Kings Church Furniture Recycling Scheme collects unwanted furniture and passes it on to families in need.
Veronica Copeland, Darlington Council's cabinet member for sustainable environment and climate change, said: "We all have a role to play in reducing the amount of rubbish we produce, and in turn helping the environment by reducing the amount of landfill."
