A mother who volunteered to help pupils read at her son's school in the Black Country has been named this year's Outstanding New Teacher.

Former engineer Christine Finnegan, 38, at first spent a few hours at St Hubert's Roman Catholic Primary School, in Oldbury, helping children to read.

She enjoyed it so much she is now a fully qualified teacher.

She said: "I am glad I changed jobs. I have found it to be inspirational. The children will be excited about this."

Ms Finnegan received her trophy at the National Teaching Awards in Gaydon, Warwickshire, on Friday.

Her category was open to all qualified teachers in their second or third year who could demonstrate a passion for learning.

She said: "I think I was nominated for the award because of the route I came in.

"I had to go back to studying and I only qualified two years ago."

She has helped forge links with poorer schools in South Africa and India and encourages her own class to correspond with children there via e-mail.
