Agency confirms 23 new flu cases

Tests are now carried out regionally as more cases are reported

More than 20 new cases of swine flu in the West Midlands have been confirmed.

On Monday the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the 23 new cases took the total number in the region to 139.

Staffordshire Primary Care Trust confirmed an "adult member of the school community" at Edensor Technology College in Longton has the virus.

A letter to pupils and parents said the individual was receiving treatment and recovering well. Close contacts have also been given Tamiflu tablets.

Regional testing

The school also said no restrictions were being put in place but parents were urged to keep their children at home if they had flu-like symptoms.

A further three cases were confirmed in the West Midlands region over the weekend.

There are now 621 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK.

Tests are now carried out regionally and as more cases are reported, the HPA said it was unable to release more specific geographical details of cases.
