Food bug outbreak "contained"
Hospital ward
The number of food bug sufferers is still rising
Health officials are hopeful the food poisoning outbreak in Bradford has been contained.

Medics say the number of cases requiring hospital treatment has slowed to a trickle after a large number of people were admitted earlier in the week.

On Saturday three more people were admitted to Bradford's Royal Infirmary suffering from food poisoning, taking the total number of cases to 170 in the past week.

Public health officials in the city say the three are not new cases, but people who have been ill for a number of days.

Around 170 people have been notified to public health officers in the city since last Monday.

During the week around 65 people were admitted to hospital, but most have improved and been sent home.

Seven children and one adult are still on the wards being treated for the bug.

Laboratory tests show the illness has been caused by a strain of the salmonella bug.

Consultant in Communicable Disease Control Dr Ruth Gelletlie said: "I am hopeful that we are seeing an end to this outbreak,

"At this stage we have had no new notifications for people who became ill after Thursday last week.

"However, we are still becoming aware during home visits that a number of other family members have been mildly affected. but have not been ill enough to present either at hospital or their family doctor's surgery."

And she said meticulous hand washing when preparing food, eating or after using the toilet was essential to prevent the spread of the infection within families.
