Troubled school wipes slate clean
Headlands School
The walkout led to the whole school being sent home
A school, which was at the centre of a student protest earlier this year, starts the new term with a clean slate.

Headlands School in Swindon hit the headlines in May after a teacher wrote to pupils telling them they were being neglected and blaming the management.

Malcolm Walker was threatened with disciplinary action, which prompted a walkout by about 40 pupils.

In June, the head teacher resigned. On Tuesday the school reopens under the government's Fresh Start initiative.

Pupils' concern

The walkout in May led to the entire school being sent home for the day.

The protesting pupils said they were worried about standards and opposed the decision to discipline Mr Walker because he cared and had made them work hard.

As part of the Fresh Start programme, the entire staff were made redundant at the end of last term and had to reapply for their jobs.

The school hopes that under new leadership, it can put past problems behind it and concentrate on improving results.
