More carers needed for teenagers

Carers say working with teenagers is not easy, but is rewarding
An appeal has been launched for more foster carers to look after teenagers in Wiltshire.

The county council is looking for people who can help youngsters work through their difficulties and challenging behaviour.

The authority is responsible for about 300 children, two thirds of whom are living in foster homes.

Mel Moore, who has provided foster care for 30 years admitted it was not always easy, but was rewarding.

Low self-esteem

"When you first come to work with teenagers you do not expect the job to be easy," she said.

"But if you can change their behaviour just a little bit, then that can be like the trunk of a tree from which branches can spring."

Foster parents, Adrian and Mary Walker, added: "Some of the children have a real lack of confidence and possess extremely low self-esteem and you are trying to build that up and give them as reasonable a start as possible."

Approved carers for teenagers can receive up to 365 a week in allowances as well as training and 24-hour support.
