Farm fined for polluting lakes
A Wiltshire farm has been fined 12,000 for a slurry spill that killed around 2,000 fish.

More than 300,000 gallons of slurry overran frozen, rutted ground at Willow Brook Farm in Stockley last December.

Whetham Lake, immediately downstream from the farm, and nearby Bowood Lake were badly polluted.

The farm was fined by Chippenham Magistrates on Tuesday after pleading guilty to causing poisonous slurry to enter controlled waters.

The spill was reported to the Environment Agency, which found high ammonia levels and very low oxygen in Bowood Lake.

More than 2,000 dead fish were seen, although the agency estimated numbers may have been higher.

Aerators had to be placed in both lakes for 11 days to stop the spread of pollution.

In addition to the fine, the farm, which has 500 cows, was ordered to pay costs of 1,187.
